1/2/2023 0 Comments Cache xsort and qsort sort.ccThis is just another article reinforcing that std::sort is in fact quite superior to the old workhorse qsort. Of course Scott Meyers already discussed this in length in his book Effective STL. Then the programmers are less frustrated and more eager to tackle the runtime performance problems and maybe comes up with a better algorithm that doesn't require as much sorting, thus speeding up the game in the end more than the guys who went with the std::sort method. Going with a solution that causes you to use the possibly slower qsort, but having faster compile times (maybe 1 minute faster) does add up over the course of a project. Don't underestimate the gain from having rapid turnaround times for the programmers. The term "death by a thousand cuts" comes to mind. (yepp, just declare the prototype locally, it's not as it will actually change).Ĭompile times are important, it's something that is usually not covered until it's way too late. The C version uses such amazing things as prototypes and prebuilt libraries (fancy such advanced features), which if you are careful can induce zero inclusion cost. It also includes, which usually is on par with windows.h. Ok, so why are not everybody doing this? Hm, well, there are some drawbacks to std::sort as well, which are nicely swept under the rug. But something is going on here definitely and the function call to do the compare for qsort and the fact that it can be inlined by std::sort looks like a win. Cache xsort and qsort sort.cc Pc#Now I would take these results with a grain of salt, the arrays were different, the algorithms might be different and I'm running on my non deterministic PC (and it runs Vista, thus all bets are off). Turning around and preventing std::sort from inlining the comparison shows that the times goes up and is now comparable to the regular qsort. Even though std::sort actually expands out to a lot more code, it's faster. Listing 3: Output from the sample program showing some timings.įrom the output we can see that using std::sort and giving the function a chance to inline the whole thing is faster than the regular qsort. But for the special case when you do have a large-ish array of linear (small) things that you need to sort with a simple short comparison function (ok, I've probably lost most of you here?) this could be somewhat true. At most they can show some indication on what can happen, but as Christer Ericson mentions, simple tests like these are not always so good, or just downright bad. We're going to do some fairly quick and dirty tests, not particularly good actually. The compiler has no chance to actually rearrange the calling convention, since the function signature actually defines that the callback needs to be a standard C function. The function call will in worst case cause a stack reference to store the return address. The function callback is pretty bad though, it will cause an indirection for each compare. Cache xsort and qsort sort.cc plus#On the plus side, the function does not know about the data at compile time and can be put in a library. You send in the stride and the range to the function. If we look at qsort, it takes a function callback to do the actual compare between two items since it the library function itself doesn't know anything about the data. You might think that they both perform about the same? Not really. You might even go, hey there is a library function for this, why reinvent the wheel? Turns out that there are two different functions, the old trusty qsort from the standard C library and the new std::sort from the C++ library (STL). This article is not going to go into any of that. There are numerous texts on sorting and the different algorithms, their complexities and their merits. So while I'm happily downloading The Orange Box on Steam, I'm writing this very quick and dirty post. In fact, it's even involving templates, my old archenemy (Bowser is nothing compared to them). I'm going to do something different today, instead of bashing on C++ as I usually do, I'm going to point at some good things about it. We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time.

ART OF RALLY BEST SETTINGS HOW TOThe game launches you into the freeroam mode, but doesn’t provide much in the way of an instructive tutorial on how to actually drift. If you’re brave, you can also race around the whole thing in a logging truck, or a triwheeler if you fancy.Īrt of rally‘s trickiest challenge is really just getting to grips with the controls in the beginning. ART OF RALLY BEST SETTINGS FREEYou can free roam around five “levels” which have their own collectibles to find, and there’s custom rallies and time attack modes, the latter of which will let you customise weather conditions. That’s the strength of its crystal clear art direction, and there’s enough of a skill ceiling with the driving mechanics to really challenge you if you want to push for the fastest times.Īlong with the campaign mode, there’s daily and weekly online events. The photo mode, added to art of rally since launch, leads to some incredible images too.Įven when it’s running at pure potato quality, art of rally looks fantastic. On the other side, however, the game looks absolutely gorgeous at 4K, especially when the soft sun sunset falls on the square spectators fleeing off the track. It didn’t run well - you’d want to apply a 30 frame rate cap to avoid heavy spikes when forests start to get drawn in - but it was certainly playable. Nonetheless, with some tanking of all the graphics settings, the game ran serviceably on a 8th-gen Intel laptop with Intel HD 620 integrated graphics. I spent most of my time playing art of rally in my week off, when I wasn’t really equipped or geared up for doing reviews. You can turn it all the way down to 320×240, which is handy if, like me, you’re stuck on a bit of a potato. None of the cars are official, although for rally fans you’ll be able to recognise the original inspiration quickly enough.īlissfully, the game’s quite generous with the graphics settings on PC. You’ve got about 60 stages to work through across five countries (Finland, Sardinia, Norway, Japan and Germany), although a good chunk of those are reverse courses. Image: Kotaku AustraliaĮach stage is set after a particular year, so as you move forward, you’ll unlock cars relevant to that time period (along with some nice quips about the background for each vehicle). The game takes you through career-style stages, with each year adding longer stages - so three or four races instead of two - and more difficult environments, like night-time rallies and challenging weather. You’ll be either driving from one of 8 cameras, all of which vary between top-down views or high shots behind the car as you drifting through towns, mountains and some very vibrant landscapes. You’ve got access to the clutch, handbrake and gearbox if you want to drive stick, but otherwise, it’s very much a retro experience. There’s no cockpit view or much in the way of controls. There’s no advanced tuning, repairs, adjustments. That vibe’s important, because it helps paper over some of the game’s simplicity. Synthwave has been my jam since a mate put me onto it a year ago, and the way it’s used in art of rally is absolutely perfect. I could - and frequently do - listen to this stuff all day for work. 1/2/2023 0 Comments Hot women of the olympicsThe sizzling English beauty, Payne comes 7th on the hottest women swimmers alive list. Red! for checking scripts and stuff for guide version 1.0. Special thanks to Sébastien Caisse a.k.a. General credit goes to the people on the No Mutants Allowed message board. Of other Fallout 2 writings I would recommend those of Whitechocobo666, author of the Endings FAQ, the Perks FAQ, the Weapon/armour FAQ and the Evil Walk-through Steve Metzler, whose Steve's Guide to Fallout 2 was my original source of inspiration Chris Avellone, co-designer of the game and maker of the Fallout Bible and also Cristian Golumbovici. Hopefully this guide should avoid those pitfalls with some margin to spare. Sadly, many guides are either poorly written ("klammth this place stinks btr get sum quest!!! i need the xp!!!!!"), give embarrassingly bad advice ("So that's why I always tag Throwing, First Aid and Barter"), include patently false information ("If you keep the Pipe Gun in one of your active item slots it will give you Agility +3, it doesn't work for all characters"), or are glaringly incomplete ("I've heard there is a place called New Reno in this game but I never found it"). Virtually every piece of information or advice presented here has been verified in personal testing or playing experience, although I have of course consulted rather a lot of existing walkthroughs and board postings for snippets of information and things to try out. I don't recommend cheating, other than momentarily for the purpose of experiencing things that you wouldn't normally see, or in a last-ditch attempt to save a doomed character. Eye of the beholder walkthrough special quests mods#Since trainers, utilities and mods aren't part of the game, I won't deal with them specifically. I've also used Falche2 Character Editor 2.10 and Inventory Editor 1.01 extensively to try out situations and features moreover I've used Fallout 2 DAT explorer v1.42 to unpack game files, Fallout Items Mode Editer 1.1 to check out some item details, Fallout Utility for Critter tinKering 0.62 to check out some critter data, and the script decompilers by TeamX and Noid as well as the scripts that came with the Fallout 2 Mapper to check lots of things. To my knowledge there is not a single significant difference between the UK and US versions except for the children thing. Eye of the beholder walkthrough special quests Patch#I've been playing the game using the UK edition, patch version 1.02e plus the "children patch". There are details and aspects you won't notice until your second, third or fourth game, playing different characters with different attitudes. The basic assumption is that players want to squeeze as much out of their game as possible - which is another thing that makes writing this guide worthwhile, because Fallout 2 is a game that just keeps on giving. Eye of the beholder walkthrough special quests manual#For game mechanics, detailed item stats and such, consult the manual and/or available in-game information. It is not, on the other hand, an attempt to compile reams of game data such as documenting every karma point gained or lost, because it wouldn't be much fun. This guide is an attempt to provide a thorough presentation of the things you can do in Fallout 2: quests to perform, places to go, people to eat. That turned out to be quite an undertaking, but on the other hand, as far as I'm concerned Fallout 2 is the best computer game ever made. This guide exists because I realized that if I wanted the kind of complete Fallout 2 guide that I envisioned, it pretty much meant writing it myself. Welcome to my Fallout 2 guide/walkthrough. Introduction "Hey, stranger! Need a guide?" If you want to play a moron who can hardly talk because of his low intelligence, you can. If you want to play an evil bastard, you can (Yes, you really can hit children in the groin with a sledgehammer). If you want to play a goodie-two-shoes, you can. Fallout 2 allows you to play your character the way you want. Fallout 2 is cool because it's a nonlinear, nonclassbased kickass postnuclear computer roleplaying game with a high replayabillity value. Mercifully, there was no wind, not even a light breeze. I decided to pack up as I was becoming weary of standing in the cold (25☏) for a few hours. I finally reacquired the asteroid at 9:10 pm and followed it until 9:35 pm when I accidently exhaled on the eyepiece, fogging it up. The zoom eyepiece goes up to 70x with a 1° TFOV. I don't use a finder scope, but at its lowest magnification, 30x, there's a 2° TFOV. Nasa asteroid watch live feed manual#This scope is on a manual altazimuth mount (actually, a nice photo gimble head on a photo tripod). I continued to follow it until 8:10 pm, when I moved too far while tracking it, then got lost trying to backtrack. I actually saw it a few minutes earlier, but wanted to confirm movement before declaring it found. Using my 115 mm (4.5 inch) apo spotting scope, I was able to pick up 1994 PC1 at 7:40 pm EST. I was out to the New Jersey Pines for a few hours last night, 1, under a bright, nearly-full moon and passing high thin clouds. It will look similar to a very slow-moving satellite. Nasa asteroid watch live feed Pc#Thankfully, 1994 PC 1 isn't one of these speed demons, making it more accessible. The closest-approaching PHAs move extremely rapidly and can be hard to track. Give yourself at least five minutes to familiarize yourself with the star field, so you can nab the intruder when the time is right. The key to finding and following the minor planet is to locate a relatively bright star or star pattern on the map in advance of its arrival. For comparison, Earth's albedo is 0.37 and the Moon's is 0.12. That's about the same reflectance as grass or red brick. It helps that 1994 PC 1 is not only large but also a good reflector of light with an albedo of 0.28 (reflecting 28% of the light it receives from the Sun). But at magnitude 10–10.5 and with the Moon in the opposite part of the sky, it should still be accessible in a 4-inch telescope. Nasa asteroid watch live feed full#Click here for a large map.īe aware that the Moon will be just past full and shines brightly in Cancer at the same time that the asteroid is best visible. Be aware that the precise path of the asteroid will vary a small amount depending upon your viewing location, so keep your eyes open for a moving object on or near the plotted path. This map covers January 19th UT (January 18th for the Americas), when 1994 PC 1 will be well-placed for observing as soon as it gets dark. Watch for it to pass 1.5° northeast of the 9th-magnitude planetary NGC 1360 in Fornax around 7–7:30 p.m. Three nights later on January 17th, it brightens to magnitude 10.3 and becomes more conveniently placed for northern observers, heading northwest at about 1.5° per hour from Fornax into Eridanus. EST, our whiz kid is already at magnitude 12.2 and located in the southern constellation Pictor about 8° northwest of Canopus. Fortunately, impacts of this size occur only about once every 500,000 years, leaving enough time (we hope) to find a way to deflect the inevitable, future PHA that has Earth in its crosshairs. The shockwave, fireball, falling debris and powerful tsunamis (assuming an oceanic strike) would create widespread regional havoc and devastation. Were it to impact our planet, it would excavate a crater about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) across. Based on its spectral type, it's a typical S-class or stony asteroid with a silicate composition. It means we're finding more asteroids all the time, reducing the odds of one coming from out of nowhere to strike our planet.Īsteroid 1994 PC 1 measures 1.1 kilometers across. The sharp slope of the curve is good news. Of those, about 2,000 fit the definition of potentially hazardous objects, which could possibly collide with Earth in the future. You get a taste of what cosmic velocity really means.Īs of January 11, 2022, astronomers have identified 27,948 near-Earth asteroids. That's what makes observing Earth-approaching asteroids such a treat. We're so used to celestial objects moving slowly or not at all. Once you lock on, you're in the astronomical fast lane, cruising across star fields, making and breaking asterisms with abandon. Watching a fast-moving asteroid is a total blast. But this time around, the space rock comfortably misses Earth and instead puts on a safe show for small telescope users. An artist's concept shows an extreme perspective of the scene.Īsteroid (7482) 1994 PC 1 is big and potentially hazardous, meaning that its orbit intersects Earth's. As seen from the asteroid at that time, the Earth's apparent size will be 23 arcminutes or about two-thirds the apparent size of the Moon. Asteroid (7482) 1994 PC 1 is considerably larger and brighter and will be making a close approach on January 18th. Asteroids routinely pass near Earth, but most range from several to a few dozen meters across and appear faint. 1/2/2023 0 Comments Molecular mass finderProgram is based on the binomial theorem for the calculation of the isotopic distributions Presentation of the calculated masses and their relative occurrences.
